MICR uses a combination of ink containing iron oxide and specific fonts so they can be read in by a specialist reader. Normal ink does not contain iron oxide so only the MICR ink will be picked up by the reader, effectively ignoring everything else. This means that regardless of what is written over the magnetic ink it could still be read by the device.

cheque
This is almost exclusively used for checks as can be seen on the right. The cheque number and account number are written on the bottom of the cheque using magnetic ink. This can then be very quickly read in by the reader so it can be quickly processed by the banks. As cheques can sometimes be mistreated there could be stains or marks over the magnetic ink. This will not pose much problem as the iron oxide should still be there meaning that it could still be easily read by a machine even if a human could not read it.
