Application software is software which allows a user to carry out a specific task. For example Pegasus mail allows a user to send an email. The task in this case is creating and sending an email. Some application software can be used for many different tasks. This subset of application software is known as generic application software.

Any software which the user runs to do a specific task, such as create a presentation, would be considered application software. Generic applications is simply a small group of applications which can do many different tasks. Some examples of Generic applications software are -
